Hill Fire Dust Devils

The recent "Hill Fire" came too close for comfort to Oaks Hills (near Victorville). For several hours, it produced a number of fire dust devils that could be seen from miles away. One would start up, grow to a large size, then dissipate. In a few minutes, another would start. Dust devils form when hot air near the surface rises quickly and starts to rotate. Spot fires produced plenty of hot air for these dust devils to start with black smoke, then fade to tan before disappearing.

Click here for a short close-up video clip (1 Mb) of one of these devils. Click here for a 4 x speed longer video clip (1.5 Mb) that highlights the circular motion and movement of the funnel along the ground.
